Understanding physical silver

Learn how silver coins, rounds and bars differ and why storage and product premiums matter.

Physical silver is available in several formats and sizes. Its lower price per ounce than gold can make it accessible, while also creating different storage and transportation considerations.

Coins, rounds and bars

Government-issued bullion coins have stated sovereign specifications. Privately minted rounds resemble coins but are not sovereign legal-tender issues.

Bars range from small units to larger formats. Product recognition, producer, weight and condition should be confirmed before purchase.

Premiums matter

The purchase price normally includes the underlying silver value plus fabrication, distribution and dealer costs.

Premiums can expand or contract according to product availability and demand. Compare the total purchase and potential resale economics.

Storage requirements

Silver generally requires more physical space than an equivalent dollar value of gold. Weight, shipping, insurance and secure storage should be planned before purchasing.

IRA-owned silver may require qualified custody and approved depository storage.
