Gold coins versus gold bars

Compare sovereign coins and bullion bars by recognition, premiums, format, storage and liquidity.

Coins and bars both provide exposure to physical gold, but they can differ in producer, recognition, premiums, packaging, available sizes and resale characteristics.

Sovereign bullion coins

Sovereign bullion coins are issued by government mints with stated weight and metal content. Recognition can support straightforward identification, but premiums vary by product and demand.

Legal-tender status does not mean the coin normally trades at its stated face value. Its bullion value is generally much greater.

Gold bullion bars

Bars are produced by sovereign and private mints in several sizes. Larger bars may carry different premiums per ounce but can be less divisible when only part of a holding needs to be sold.

Producer reputation, serial numbers, assay packaging and product condition may affect verification and resale.

Review metal content, purchase premium, delivery, storage, insurance and potential liquidation terms.

Do not select a product solely because its price appears lower without confirming authenticity, specifications and all transaction costs.
